The Louisiana Department of Education has named semifinalists for Louisiana Principal of the Year and finalists for New Teacher of the Year and two outstanding Bossier Parish educators made the cut.

Benton Intermediate School Principal Jennifer Burris was named a Principal of the Year Semifinalist and Michael Shelton, who is a first-year teacher at Rusheon Middle School, advanced as a New Teacher of the Year Finalist.

Burris has spent the past 25 years in education, the last five of those as principal at Benton Intermediate. She previously served as Assistant Principal at Benton Middle School. Beloved by her faculty and staff, Burris leads the only school in Bossier Parish with a 5th/6th grade configuration.

Shelton is an eighth grade Science teacher at Rusheon Middle School. He believes strongly in the power of personal connections and is committed to fostering meaningful relationships with his students, believing it is essential to fill multiple roles in their lives.

“Louisiana’s educators play a vital role in shaping the future of students and our state,” said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “These outstanding teachers, principals, and early childhood leaders exemplify excellence in education and a deep commitment to student success. We are proud to celebrate their achievements.”

Finalists for Louisiana Teacher and Principal of the Year will be announced in May. Overall honorees will be announced for all teacher, principal, and leader awards in July at the 19th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Gala.

Congratulations to Burris and Shelton. We are blessed they are a part of the Bossier Schools family!
