It has been a busy competition season for the Haughton High School Marksmanship team and it is not over yet.

The Bucs in Blue earned three 1st place wins in Louisiana and a 2nd place finish in a Texas competition, but that was only the start of their success. In late January, the Bucs competed against 37 teams in the Air Rifle State Championship where they earned 1st place in the Air Force Division and State Champion Runner-Up Overall. On an individual level, Layla Briggs earned 1st place and earned the title as State Champion out of 120 competitors! Big cheers also for Chris Fick, who earned 4th place; Erin Rigsby, 5th; Emily Wood, 15th; and Ethan Evans, 16th.

But wait, there’s more! The Haughton team earned 1st place in the Air Force Nationals qualifier, besting over a hundred teams, which earned them a spot in the Air Force JROTC National Championship where the Bucs placed 5th in the nation. Then, in an exciting finals match, Team Commander Briggs earned National Champion Runner-Up and Fick finished 25th.

The Bucs in Blue are also the American Legion Louisiana State Champions and Briggs is the overall state champion. She will be moving on to the Legion National Qualifier next month.

So, what’s next for the team? Their Air Force Nationals accomplishments have qualified them for the All-Service JROTC Championships next month in Camp Perry, Ohio.

Congratulations to the Haughton High School Marksmanship team on a stellar season and best of luck in the next round of competition.
