McKinney Vento Program

How do I know if my family qualifies for McKinney-Vento services through the district?

Children or youth (including runaway and abandoned youth) and their families who are living in a shelter, motel, vehicle, campground, on the street, in substandard housing, doubled up with relatives of friends due to lack of housing are considered to be homeless and are qualified to receive services. The first step to seek assistance is to schedule an appointment with your school counselor to discuss your current situation.

What if the school and I disagree on where my child should attend school?

Your child is eligible to continue in the school he/she attended before becoming homeless, if the parents’ choice is feasible. Your child also has the option to attend the school in the district in which you are currently living. If you and the school disagree, the school will explain why your child should attend a different school than the one requested. Families in transition have the right to appeal the decision through the Homeless Liaison’s office.

What can I do to help my child in school?

Make sure the child attends school on time each day. Pay attention to your child’s health needs and take care of problems early. Provide a quiet place for your child to complete homework every day. Read to your child or set aside time each day for your child to read to you. Listen to your child’s problems and talk about the problems with the teacher and/or counselor. Encourage your child to participate in extra-curricular activities like sports and music.

Who can I contact for help with my child’s education?

  • Homeless Liaison – This person can help your child receive school supplies, free school meals, transportation to and from your child’s school, tutoring, and help connecting the family with community support agencies.

  • Teacher – If you need assistance contact your child’s teacher and share with him or her any special situations affecting your child’s ability to participate and learn.

  • School Counselor – Share with the person about changes and challenges you and/or your child are facing at home or things that he or she is dealing with that might affect his/her school work.

  • Principal, attendance clerk, bus driver, school nurse, and the school social worker – These are all great people to know and by working as a team with the school and district your child can receive all the services he or she needs to receive and the best education.
